Reginald T. Booyah and Gildiss Gram arrive at the paltry farming village of Drekan. After speaking to the town guards, Bruce and Will, they head to the tavern to gather information from the local patrons. Upon entering, they first notice how sickly the bartender is. He was bitten by a large rodent while outside the tavern several nights ago. He, along with the few people in the bar, suffer from terrible nightmares. Some try avoiding sleep, and claim to see shapes moving in the darkness at night.
Next they visit the town church and meet Claire, the town priestess. Her story parallels those already heard, but she describes her dreams as being about a heart inside a glass sphere, pumping dark blood. She tells Booyah and Gildiss that some of the villagers have been disappearing, but she is unsure of what to do. She asks for their assistance, offering to pay for their stay at the inn, and recommends they return at nightfall.
Before returning to the tavern, Gildiss and Booyah inspect the graveyard behind the church and the town well. The graves seem normal, except for a few covered in dead grass. When drawing water from the well, they discover a shriveled eye floating in the water that appears to be human.
Gildiss decides to sleep while Booyah keeps watch on the church out of his room window. While studying and preparing his spells, Booyah hears a scream and sees a dark shape pulling someone out of the church. He wakes Gildiss and they rush downstairs into the night. As they sprint towards the church, they spot a monster with read glowing eyes dragging Claire towards the town well. Before they can reach the well, the beast dives in, dragging Claire down with it.
A cleric races from the church in time to see Claire pulled into the well. As he is frozen in horror over what just occured, Reginald T. Booyah and Gildiss see human shapes shambling towards them from behind the church. They shout out to warn the cleric, and he brandishes a scimitar to fight them off, but is knocked unconscious by a blow to the head.
Gildiss rushes the undead, carving through them with his great sword, while Booyah hardens their undead flesh with rays of frost. They manage to kill the zombies and drag the cleric to the relative safety of the church. Upon recovering consciousness the cleric informs them that he is Bobfelk O’Bert. He begs them to help him save Claire. Gildiss is willing to go as long as he gets paid enough, and despite remarking on the ignorance of racing into a well after a monster that can drag a human with one hand, Booyah also complies.
The three of them head to the well and prepare for their descent into the unknown. Gildiss readies his blade, Booyah grips his enchanted staff, and Bob tries to pray to his god, if he could remember which one it was, and they all traverse the rope into the pit below.
